How I Got into Essential Oils for Animals

I first began using essential oils in 2005, simply because I enjoyed their scent. At the time, I wasn’t aware of their many benefits, but I often diffused them in my home. My favorite was Joy blend. It wasn’t until I noticed how uplifted I felt—once even skipping across a tennis court—that I realized there was more to these oils than just fragrance.

Nearly 20 years later, while working as a Trust Technique ® Practitioner, I experienced the impact of essential oils with animals for the first time. A client had two very nervous dogs who typically paced and remained unsettled whenever visitors were present. During our session, however, both dogs calmly went to their beds and fell asleep—something their owners said had never happened before.

It was only afterward that I made the connection: I had been wearing a calming blend. That moment opened my eyes to how essential oils can support not only people, but also animals.

Today, essential oils are an integral part of my approach. Whether for my clients’ pets or my own, they are often the first tool I reach for to encourage relaxation, balance, and well-being. I’m deeply grateful to the animals who have guided me on this journey

Stress and Anxiety Reduction:

Certain essential oils, such as lavender and chamomile, are known for their calming effects. When diffused safely, they may help create a more relaxed environment for pets that experience anxiety due to things like separation, loud noises, or travel.

Skin and Coat Health:

Some oils have anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties that can help soothe skin irritations, hot spots, or other skin issues. They can also be used in specially formulated pet shampoos to promote a healthy and shiny coat.

Essential oils like cedarwood and lemongrass are often used as natural repellents for fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes. These oils can be found in pet-specific sprays or shampoos designed to help protect your pet from these parasites.
